Lamb Carcass Show a continued success for Welsh Country Foods

IMGP8865

This year’s Welsh Country Foods’ (WCF) lamb carcass show in association with ASDA LambLink was hugely successful, with some of the highest quality lamb Wales and Northern England have to offer being showcased.

The event took place at the WCF site in Anglesey, Gaerwen, on Tuesday 18th September, with over 160 carcasses entered.

Farmers and industry representatives viewed all entries, before Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) and Meat & Livestock Commercial Services (MLC) demonstrated how to maximise carcass value and how to classify a carcass correctly and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) demonstrated the importance of keeping healthy livestock. HCC Project Executive Dewi Hughes said:

“We were delighted to be involved at the show, and the main topics of conversation on our stand were how to ensure that lambs achieved market specification, and how to ensure maximum returns from each animal by reducing issues related to animal health and handling.”

There was also a meat-cutting demonstration, designed to show how important it is for farmers to produce consistent, high-quality stock to meet the demanding specification for their customers.

ASDA’s Agricultural Manager, and ASDA LambLink representative, Pearce Hughes judged the carcasses, before presenting the awards. He added: “It was great to see the event so well supported, and a high percentage of lambs in specification for our customers, revealing good consistency and quality throughout.”

The show consisted of six different breed categories. In addition, ‘Best Young Farmer’s Lamb’, ‘Best English Lamb’, ‘Reserve Champion’ and ‘Show Champion’ prizes were up for grabs.

The event attracted generous sponsorship for the evening awards ceremony, including from the Texel Society, the Charollais Society, Organic Livestock & Marketing Co-operative (OLMC), English Beef & Lamb Executive (EBLEX) and HCC. HCC was also pleased to sponsor the champion and reserve champion carcass at the show.

Prys Morgan, VION’s Sheep Procurement Controller, commented: “The carcasses entered at this year’s show were of exceptional quality. It has demonstrated what our producers are able to deliver, even when facing challenges, such as rising input costs.”

Eddie Ennis, Site Director at Gaerwen, continued: “It is vital that I can guarantee our customers the highest quality lamb.  I am confident that the partnerships we have with our loyal producers help to ensure that consistent quality is maintained, as demonstrated again at this year’s carcass show.”

A minutes’ silence was held at the show for Wynn Davies, Procurement Manager for WCF, who unfortunately passed away on Monday 17th September. His passion and commitment to the job were unprecedented and he will be thoroughly missed by all.
