VION Food Group has drawn up its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda as part of its long-term strategy (2010-2015). This agenda includes six policy areas: food & health, energy, water, public health, the use of sustainable raw materials, and animal welfare.
The name of VION’s long-term strategic vision, Balancing the Future, represents the social challenge that the company is facing today: finding the right balance between people, planet, and profit. The core of our strategy can be summarised as ‘better instead of more’. This starting point applies to VION’s use of raw materials, energy and water, and to VION’s work processes and production methods.
The combination of its two core activities – Food and Ingredients – has enabled VION Food Group to take up a unique and inherently sustainable position. The by-products of the VION Food companies are processed by VION Ingredients to create value. No raw materials are wasted and VION has even managed to close the loop where energy consumption and energy production are concerned. VION companies obtain green energy from their sister company Ecoson, energy created by digesting residual products from VION companies and other sources.
'Pushing back and adding'
In its own production processes, VION Food Group has adopted the following strategy as regards sustainability: ‘pushing back’ the use of energy, water and raw materials, something which is a central theme in our Food companies. In our Ingredients companies we focus on ‘adding’: we process and utilise by-products of animal origin and turn them into high-quality products and energy. There is no other company of our size that considers its core business to be both producing foodstuffs and adding value to the by-products that are thereby generated.
