Nutrition and Health

Globally, over one billion people are starving, whilst at the same time, over one billion more are obese.

These challenges will only grow as both global population and prosperity are forecast to grow; it is widely predicted that by 2050, the global population will have grown to nine billion. As a leading international food concern, VION recognises its responsibilities both in terms of food security and consistency of supply, and in terms of promotion of a healthy balanced diet.

In  addition to  a balanced diet,  the  reduction of  salt consumption  is also  important. Using knowledge from the Top Institute Food and Nutrition, VION has managed to reduce the amount of salt  in bacon and gammon by 800,000 kg a year. Further substantial lowering of the salt content is expected in the near future.

Targeted  at older consumers,  VION has also introduced products such as Peptan® which prevents decalcification by consuming hydrolysed collagen proteins. VION’s high- quality foodstuffs can contribute to high and healthy life expectations of people and animals.

Support for the beef production chain in Uganda

Together with two partners (ZLTO and Rabo-Foundation), VION is investigating the possibilities of starting a beef project in Uganda, where there is a great need of meat production for its own population, and for the surrounding region. This country has a lot of potential, but has insufficient structure, and limited technical knowledge and experience in the meat chain. The objective of the project is to create a more market- oriented meat chain where primary production, processing and marketing are important. Several options were studied in 2010 and a specific project will be confirmed in 2011. Each of the three participants will contribute its own specific expertise. VION will focus on meat processing, quality, and logistics. Our employees will also have the opportunity to make a contribution to this by training people in Uganda or in the Netherlands.
