Vion and Danish Crown collaborate in Northern Germany

Vion Zucht- und Nutzvieh and Danish Crown sign a contract for Vion cattle slaughtering from Schleswig-Holstein. Following the scheduled closure of the Vion site in Bad Bramstedt at the end of this month, Danish Crown will slaughter up to 1,000 young bulls, cows and heifers per week for Vion Food Group in contract from 1 August 2023.

Bad Bramstedt, 13 July 2023. “With this solution, we are happy to further offer cattle farmers in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania slaughtering opportunities in the northern part of Germany,” says Dr Holger Looft, Managing Director of Vion Zucht-Nutzvieh GmbH. The livestock trading company, which has several locations nationwide and is based in Neum√ľnster, will continue its business. It supplied Vion slaughterhouse in Bad Bramstedt with approximately 50,000 cattle in the previous year.

However, the location could no longer be operated economically due to the declining cattle population in northern Germany for years and the overcapacities on the slaughterhouse market. In future, the animals will be slaughtered at the Danish Crown abattoirs in Husum and Teterow and then taken back as beef quarters or halves by Vion’s deboning facilities. Danish Crown Managing Director Ralf Heisterkamp is looking forward to the new business: “A solution for farmers from the region is not only a business opportunity, but a step towards preserving cattle farming in northern Germany”.
