Vion hires 3,300 additional employees in Germany
Employees on work contracts will be taken on at the end of the year
Buchloe, 6th October 2020 – As of 1st January 2021, the Vion Food Group will directly hire a further 3,300 employees at its German sites, and discontinue employment via flexible work contracts. In line with its CSR guidelines, Vion had already started to successively take on employees on long-term contracts in 2017. From January 1 onwards a law banning flexible contracts via agencies for work and labour in the meat industry will be effective in Germany.
The employees concerned will work in the main areas of slaughter, preparation and packaging, where they are currently employed under contracts from employment agencies. For Vion, the change in terms of employment means responsibility for more of its own employees, as well as a number of additional tasks for which a strengthening of the HR department will be necessary. The permanent workforce is not expected to be impacted; all current employees will retain their jobs.
For HR Director Roger Legath, the rapid integration of the existing temporary workers into the company is the top priority. He says: “We are convinced that this is a good initiative to have direct responsibility for all employees in our production facilities. Initially, there will certainly be some language problems in our day-to-day operations, as our new employees come mainly from Eastern European countries. In order to overcome the distance that naturally arises from existing language barriers, we will not only provide language courses, but also direct support, for example in dealing with official bodies.”
In order to understand the needs of the new employees as accurately as possible, Vion will be conducting employee surveys over the coming days and weeks.
