Vion takes the next step to further reduce its CO2 emissions in food logistics significantly

Buchloe, 25 November 2021. The food producer Vion is equipping eight new semi-trailers with fully electric cooling technology to advance its project “Vion Move Food Green” and reduce pollution in food logistics even further. At the end of November, the company acquired the first eight trailers with fully electric rather than diesel cooling systems.

This is made possible by the Dutch company THT New Cool, which reduces the diesel consumption of semi-trailers – which require up to 30 litres per day with standard cooling systems – to 0. This is all thanks to a technological solution which supplies the trailer cooling system with energy through a battery and the recovery of braking energy. “This ensures that our cooling system does not emit greenhouse gases like CO2, nor will it create any soot or particulate pollution in future,” explains Michael Schippler (photo middle), Head of Fleet Management International at Vion.

Twan Heetkamp, Director of THT New Cool (photo left), emphasizes just how significant aerodynamic design combined with cooling that is not reliant on fuel is for the entire food transport chain: “Vion will get considerably closer to achieving its objective of reducing the CO2 emissions of its fleet of c. 300 semi-trailers to around 1,500 t per year in the medium term. This shows that investment in sustainable food logistics is worth it.” Already since March, Vion has been testing trailers equipped with the Betterflow aerodynamic system and has “already seen very good results in terms of reducing CO2 emissions”, says Dr. Katharina Schweiger, Vion Project Manager in Logistics & Supply Chain.

With an average fuel saving of up to 2.2 l/100 km over six months, Vion even managed to exceed the predictions of the system manufacturer. The fuel consumption of a truck weighing on average 29 t sank to 22.3 l/100 km according to the electronic fleetboard. Comparable trucks with trailers use around 24.5 litres.

In terms of sustainable and future-oriented food production, Vion is now going a considerable step further.
